A very fashionable design at the moment is a set of angel or tribal wings, these are usually full size and are placed across your shoulder blades, one each side of your spine.
These large back pieces are designed to evoke the image of real angel wings.
Although, of course, some wing tattoos are small these are often incorporated with other design elements or are part a single image such as an angel, butterfly, fairy or bird.
This particular type of wing can be positioned anywhere on your body.

I believe that a strong word of advice is necessary at this juncture, so here it is.
If you do choose to have a large set of wings tattooed across your back this does not mean that you really can fly, so do not try this at home, as they say.

Wings are synonymous with flight and lightness, therefore signifying a desire for the freedom that flight bestows.
They can show a desire for the angelic qualities of goodness and purity, the wish to look after and protect loved ones, to be their guardian angel.
Wings can symbolize religious dedication and devotion, or simply an appreciation for beautiful tattoo art.
